Place of residence : Kiratpur 1630-1645 = 15 years; Nahan*1645-1657 =12 yrs: Kiratpur 1657-1661 =4 Yrs. Departure from the mortal world (1661): at the young age of 31 years at Kiratpur Sahib.
Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji was the seventh Guru of the Sikhs. Baba Gurditta Ji eldest son of Guru Hargobind Sahib left this mortal world during the life time of Guru Hargobind Sahib. In 1644 Guru Hargobind Sahib gave Gur-gaddi to Guru Har Rai Sahib. Bhai Bhana Ji son of Baba Budha Ji applied Tilak on the forehead and all sons of Guru Hargobind Sahib paid respect to the 7Th Guru Sahib.
He was very compassionate, kind and caring, and was concerned not only about the welfare of human beings, but also that of the animals, birds, setting and the nature.The modern concept of eco-friendly has its roots in the working of Guru Harr Rai Sahib. He is
remembered in Sikh history as very sensitive to nature, environment and conservation. Many thousand trees were planted, under his guidance, in and around Kiratpur and Nahan during his life time. He travelled to many nearby places to spread the message of Sikhism. He visited Lahore, Sialkot,
Pathankot, Samba and Ramgarh amongst many other places. He developed the Manji system founded by Guru Amardas and also worked to improve and mend the Masand system which was becoming corrupt and immoral. Guru Sahib established a free Ayurvedic Clinic and an Indian Herbs study centre at Kiratpur and healed many hundred patients, who came there from all nearby places. He also cured Dara Shikoh, eldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan, from some mysterious illness.
His other contributions include:
Recommendation of compulsory daily prayers for all devotees.
Feeding the hungry and always keeping one's door open for the needy.
Established a veterinary consulting room to lookafter sick animals and birds.
Opened Bakhshish (missionary) centres to impart free religious education to all
His Teachings include:
Love of God and Man
Correct pronunciation of Gurbani
Teaching and educating ordinary folks with the use of parables.
A few examples of his parables are as follows:-
1. He said that even if a man broke flowers with one hand and offered them with the other hand, the flowers perfumed both hands.
2. An axe although cuts the 'Sandal' tree, yet it perfumes the axe.
3. He said that one must recite Gurbani, even though he/she does not understand its
meaning, for the listening and reading Shabads leave their mark on the heart and clean the sins from the conscious.
He often quoted Guru Nanak’s hymn: Since his elder son Ram Rai Ji by misreading the lines of Guru Granth Sahib had earned his displeasure, Guru Sahib before leaving this mortal world in 1661 gave Gur–gaddi to Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji.
