Guru Teg Bahadur Ji

Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib was born on 1st April 1621. Guru Hargobind Sahib our 6th Guru and Bibi Nanaki were the parents. He had one Sister Bibi Veero and four brothers Baba Surajmal, Baba Gurditta, Baba Aneerai and Baba Atal. At a very young age he was married to Mata Gujri Ji daughter of Bhai Lal Chand of Kartarpur. From his childhood he used to spend lot of time in meditation. On the instructions of Guru Hargobind Sahib his mother Bibi Nanaki Ji took him to Bakala village where he lived for approx. 26 years. There most of the time he had spent in deep meditation. Guru Hargobind Sahib before leaving for Eternal Abode gave the responsibility as 7Th Guru to Har Rai Sahib who was son of Baba Gurditta Ji. Guru Har Rai Sahib further gave the responsibility to spread the Divine message to Guru Harkrishan Sahib his younger son at a tender age of 5 years. At the time of shuffling his mortal coil in the year 1664 he uttered the word bwbw bkwly (Baba Bakale) by which he expressed his desire for Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib to succeed him to his position as 9th Guru Sahib. In the village Bakala many of the greedy and scheming relatives flocked there claiming the rights to Guru Gaddi. One day a business man Bhai Makhan Shah Lubana whose ship was saved while praying to Akal Purakh came to Bakala in search of the pious Guru. After meeting all fake and self made Gurus realised that there is one pious person who is not in the race knew exactly what had happened to him and how his ship was saved. He loudly announced from the rooftop ''Guru Ladho Re, Guru Ladho Re'.

Noble and devoted Sikhs waiting for their 9th Guru came there and paid respect to Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib. Baba Gurditta Ji grandson of Baba Budha Ji put a Tilak on the forehead of Guru Sahib and he became 9+ Guru Sahib at the age of 44 years. Guru Sahib came to Kiratpur Sahib and later purchased Makhoval territory from Deep Chander who was ruler of Bilaspur. He founded a new town and named 'Chak Nanaki'. This became famous as 'Anandpur Sahib'. Guru Sahib started extensive travel covering eastern India, Bengal and Assam. At all places he visited, Akal Purakh's message was spread. He met many Saints, Faqirs and Scholars and had discourses. Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib composed 116 Divine Hymns in 15 Ragas. These Divine Hymns were added in Guru Granth Sahib by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Salok Mahala 9 has a special significance for they are last and final updesh embodied in Sri Guru Granth Sahib and for that matter, these Sloks may be said to contain the epitome of the teachings. The Path of Guru Granth Sahib starts with Japji Sahib and ends with Salok Mahala 9. During this travel news came about the birth of his son Gobind Rai at Patna. Guru Sahib came to Patna and then left for Punjab. Aurangzeb was the Mughal King at that time and he was forcibly converting Hindus to Islam. On account of such unbearable wickedness, a group of Kashmiri Pandits under the guidance of Bhai Kriparam went to Anandpur Sahib. They narrated their plight to Guru Sahib and sought his help and protection. On hearing their sad and pitiable state of affairs, Guru Sahib was deeply moved. He expressed that under such circumstances, it is important that some noble soul must sacrifice his life for saving the dharma and honour of the people.

Guru Sahib apprised the Pandit Community of his resolution and asked them to go to Aurangzeb and tell him that they were ready to embrace Islam if he can convert Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib to Islam. On hearing this statement Aurangzeb sent his messengers to bring Guru Sahib to Delhi. Guru Sahib readily agreed to come to Delhi and left with his five Sikhs- Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das, Bhai Dyal Das, Bhai Gurditta and Bhai Uda Rathore. On reaching Agra he got himself arrested and brought to Delhi by Mughal forces. He was confined in Kotwali at Chandni chowk. Kazi (Muslim Judge)tried his best to induce Guru Sahib for agreeing to embrace Islam and show miracles. to escape death. But Guru Sahib did not agree. Bhai Mati Das's body was cut alive with sharp wheel. Bhai Dyala Das was put in boiling cauldron; Bhai Sati Das was wrapped in cotton and burnt alive. All these Sikhs sacrificed their lives with Japji Sahib on their lips. Seeing all this Guru Sahib did not agree to the demands of the Kazi. Order was given to behead him. The executioner instantly chopped off the head of Guru Sahib on 11th November 1675.

This is the place where we have Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib. There was a big storm and it became all dark. Bhai Jaita Rangreta without losing any time took Guru Sahib's head and left for Anadpur Sahib. Guru Gobind Singh Sahib blessed him as Rangreta Guru Kal Beta. Bhai Lakhi Shah Vanjara hid the headless body of Guru Sahib in his bullock cart and did the last rites by burning his own hut. This is the place where we have Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib.
